From March 24 to 28, 2025, as part of the international project “Transformational Learning Network for Ensuring Sustainability – Supporting Ukrainian Higher Education in Ensuring Sustainable and Reliable Reconstruction (Post-War) of Ukraine,“ a series of online lectures was held on the course ”Sustainable Paths and Risk Management in Crisis Situations.” The course covered current challenges in risk management, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s post-war recovery.

Representatives of Ukrainian universities partnering in the project have joined the educational process.   Scientists, educators, and students strive to implement sustainable development approaches in their professional activities.

Main topics of the online course:

      • Managing sustainable development risks in conditions of uncertainty;
      • Managing environmental risks and risks from human activity;
      • Energy risk parameters;
      • Risk-oriented modeling of emergency situations;
      • Adapting to climate change during crises;
      • Restoring human potential in crisis conditions.

From April 7 to 12, 2025, the Technical University in Liberec (Czech Republic) hosted the project’s spring school, which was a practical continuation of the online course. Participants from Ukrainian higher education institutions worked together on real cases, exchanged experiences, and developed practical skills for sustainable management in risky conditions.

Spring school activities include:

      • SWOT analysis to assess human potential development during a crisis;
      • Practical training in the format of an “Environmental Court” on the topic of “Adapting to Climate Change”;
      • Business games – “Solving environmental and socio-economic problems” and “Identifying risks, compromises, and solutions.”

The practical stage of the course was an extremely valuable experience for both students and teachers from partner universities. Participants actively interacted in interdisciplinary groups, sought unconventional approaches to solving complex cases, and shared ideas and creative approaches.

The atmosphere of cooperation went far beyond the formal learning process—informal communication and shared leisure activities only strengthened team spirit and mutual understanding.

The students demonstrated a high level of engagement and creativity, presenting extremely interesting final presentations that summarized the knowledge and practical skills they had acquired. Participation in the program also opened up new horizons for them, both professionally and personally: new acquaintances, cultural exchange, and international communication.

For teachers, this school became an important platform for testing the first interdisciplinary training course that combines the topics of sustainable development, risk management, and recovery in crisis conditions. Working together with colleagues from other countries, exchanging educational approaches, and receiving feedback from students provided a solid foundation for improving future curricula and formats.

A key component of the spring school was the discussion of the draft Guidelines for Sustainable Development Management in Universities, which is intended to serve as a practical tool for Ukrainian higher education institutions. It will allow for the integration of sustainable development goals at all levels, from strategic management to daily practice. We sincerely thank our project partners for their cooperation, support, and shared commitment to transforming Ukrainian higher education.

The project aims to support Ukrainian universities in the post-war reconstruction period, expand international partnerships, introduce innovations, and strengthen the sustainability of Ukraine’s higher education system. Its results are already shaping a new quality of education focused on sustainable development goals, European integration, and global interaction.
